Grief Counselor and Educator
Katherine Godfrey joined the Children’s Brain Tumor Project Board of Directors in 2026 to help strengthen our commitment to thoughtful, compassionate support for the families we serve. Her expertise in grief education ensures that as we advance scientific discovery, we also honor the deeply human experience that surrounds a childhood brain tumor diagnosis.
Katherine earned her B.S. in Psychology from Union College and her M.A. in School Psychology from Fairfield University. She is a Certified Grief Counselor through the American Academy of Grief Counseling and has completed her training as a Certified Grief Educator with grief expert David Kessler. Additionally, Katherine has undergone training to become a Certified Grief and Loss Provider under grief therapist and author Claire Bidwell Smith. She also holds certification as a Compassionate Bereavement Care Provider with Dr. Joanne Cacciatore, a world-renowned professor/researcher specializing in traumatic grief at Arizona State University and the founder of the MISS Foundation, which supports families whose children have died.
Her professional focus is rooted in lived experience. Following her divorce and the traumatic loss of her five-year-old daughter to a brain tumor, Katherine found herself navigating a world that felt unrecognizable. Struggling to find the support she needed, she began a personal journey to better understand grief.
As a grief educator and coach, Katherine is committed to bringing conversations about loss out of the shadows. She fosters compassion, connection, and safe spaces where individuals can integrate their grief into daily life in ways that feel authentic and sustainable.
Through her role on the Board, she helps ensure that the Children’s Brain Tumor Project Foundation approaches its mission with both scientific rigor and heartfelt care.
